Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife experiences. The park is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
What happens during a gorilla trek?
- You start with an early morning briefing by park rangers.
- Small groups are assigned to a habituated gorilla family.
- Only a limited number of visitors (typically 8) are allowed per gorilla group per day.
- The hike can take anywhere from 1 to 6+ hours depending on where the gorillas are located.
- Once found, visitors are allowed to spend one hour observing the gorillas.
Gorilla Trekking sectors in Bwindi
Bwindi has four trekking sectors, each with habituated gorilla families:
- Buhoma (North) – Most established and generally easier trekking terrain.
- Ruhija (East) – Scenic views and fewer crowds.
- Rushaga (South) – Largest number of gorilla families and gorilla habituation experiences.
- Nkuringo (Southwest) – More challenging hikes but spectacular scenery.
Best Time to Visit
Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but
the drier months are usually preferred:
- June–August
- December–February
Trails tend to be less muddy during these
periods. Rain is possible at any time because Bwindi is a rainforest.
Fitness Level
You don’t need to be an athlete, but reasonable fitness helps. The terrain can be steep, muddy, and uneven. Porters are available and hiring one also supports local communities.
